Detachment of Massachusetts

2018 ~ 2019

PAST COMMANDER - ERNIE LABERGE MESSAGES

Hello everyone                                                                                        April 30, 2019

There has been improvement with membership, as a Detachment we are currently at 90.87% and the next National Goal of 100% is due by 5/8/19. Please continue to reach out to any member who has not paid their dues. With the Detachment Convention right around the corner it would be nice to close the year with a strong finish in our membership. Congratulations go out to Districts 1, 6, & 7 for reaching the 100% goal. Also congratulations to the 51 Squadrons who have reached the 100% or above goal; Great Work Everyone.

Our Detachment Adjutant Cliff Smith is working very hard getting everything together for the convention so when you arrive everything will be ready for you. If you are attending but you have not contacted Cliff please do so very soon as the cutoff date will be here before you know it. Also please don’t forget to file your Squadron Consolidated Report. The Detachment needs that information for reporting our achievements as a Detachment for the past year to both Department and the National Organization.

I look forward to seeing many of you at this year’s Convention.

Working together we can make a difference in the lives of our Veterans, their families and our communities.

Regards

Ernie

Hello everyone                                                                                            4/18/19

Membership is still low, as a Detachment we are currently sitting at 86.62% and the next National Goal of 100% is due by 5/8/19. At this time any member who has not paid their dues are no longer eligible for any benefits from the National Organization and are not considered “Members” of your Squadron. Furthermore these members who have not paid are also ineligible to be members of The American Legion Riders.

There are also Squadrons who have not submitted any membership dues to the State House this year. Please note these Squadrons could have their Charter suspended if actions are not taken to correct this issue. Please reach out to any of the Detachment Officers for assistance, Vice Commander Marvin Nay our membership chairman is work trying to help keep the Detachment on track but it takes all of us as a team working together to reach our goals.

Please check out our Detachment website, www.salmass.org for up to date information.

Hello everyone                                                                                                   Jan 22, 2019

Membership is still low but we’re starting to move ahead, as a Detachment we are currently sitting at 62.31% the next National Goal of 75% is due by 2/13/19 and that goal is very attainable if everyone works together and gets their membership in. However there are still around 17 Squadrons who have not submitted any membership dues to the State House at this time. Please note that the State House is taking notice of this! Both Marvin and I were reminded that any member who is not paid at this time is no longer eligible for any American Legion Benefits. Please reach out to any of the Detachment Officers for assistance, Vice Commander Marvin Nay our membership chairman is hard at work trying to help keep the Detachment on track but it takes all of us as a team working together to reach our goals.

I have attached a PDF copy of the most recent Department membership report for the sons for your review.

If you have members that you haven’t seen in a while give them a call and see if they need your help. A call may be all that is needed to get your membership back on track. Marvin, Cliff and I are always available to lend a helping hand just contact us or any of the Detachment Officers and we’ll do all that we can to assist you. Marvin and I travel all across the state so no Squadron is too far away to help.

Also please checkout our state website, our IT Team Mark, Gene and Tom have been doing a great job updating the Website and Facebook Page so you have the most up to date information.

Working together we can make a difference in the lives of our Veterans, their families and our communities.

Membership is very low this year, as a Detachment we are behind the Nationally set goal and currently Massachusetts is sitting at 35.25% which is well below the National Goal of 45% which is due tomorrow 12/12/18. Furthermore there are still many Squadrons who have not submitted any membership dues to the State House at this time. Please reach out to any of the Detachment Officers for assistance, Vice Commander Marvin Nay our membership chairman is hard at work trying to help keep the Detachment on track but it takes all of us as a team working together to reach our goals.

Hello everyone                                                                                      Octobet 23, 2018

All of you are aware that Veteran’s day is fast approaching. This day is one of the most important days for all American Legion Family Members as we honor all those who served this great nation. At this time I am requesting that if at all possible all Sons of The American Legion both Detachment and Squadron members show your support by attending the Boston Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade. By each of us being there it shows our conviction to honor all those who served, who are serving now and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I know that many of us support our own home towns and Posts with local events but if you have never attended this event and are able please make an effort to be there. If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the Detachment Officers or contact me directly. I hope to see many of you at this event and I look forward to working with you throughout the rest of the year.

Also if you have questions or if you need any help with membership processing Vice Commander Nay, Cliff, and I travel all across the state, so no Squadron is too far away for us to visit. Please feel free to contact Marvin, Cliff or me and we can set up a visit to your Squadron for any assistance that is needed. All our contact information can be found on the Sons State Website which is www.salmass.org

On Sunday the group will assemble and travel to the Department of Massachusetts POW/MIA Memorial at Battleship Cove in Fall River where Doc Gibs will be the Key Notes guest speaker. Please make every effort to support these two events for our Veteran’s. After all that’s why we are all a part of this great organization. I look forward to seeing you there.

Hello everyone                                                                                                     post 2018 Convention

I’d like to say thank you to all of you for electing me to my second term as your Detachment Commander. I’d also like to thank all the Detachment Officers for their continued support and service making the 2017-2018 year very successful.

My charity of choice this year is American Legion Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW). Operation Comfort Warriors is a program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded, injured or ill military personnel by providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by the government. OCW ensures that patients at U.S. military hospitals and warrior transition units are given items like sweat suits, DVDs, puzzles, electronic devices, books, calling cards and more. OCW also provides larger items such as ping pong tables, entertainment centers, computers, kayaks and other recreational goods for use by wounded warriors in common areas.

My goals for the upcoming year will again be our membership, and the timely submittal of dues and the Squadron Consolidated Report Form (CRF).  Membership continues to hold many challenges please feel free to contact The Membership Chairman Vice Commander Marvin Nay, Adjutant Cliff Smith, or contact me directly if you need any help with membership. The CRF submittal numbers increased last year and I would like to thank all of the Squadrons that completed and filed one. However, were still not receiving one from every Squadron. This report not only shows the State House what all of us are doing to support the four pillars of the Legion it also shows the National Organization what the Detachment of Massachusetts has accomplished for the past year. I’m requesting again this year that you please complete and file a CRF with the Detachment.  If you need assistance, please contact any of the Detachment officers no Squadron is too far away for us to travel and visit with.

With all of your continued support I know we can make this another great year for the Sons and the Legion family as a whole. Once again I thank you for your support of our veterans, their families and our communities and I look forward to working with you throughout the year.

Regards

Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Massachusetts
