To: All Squadrons
From; Detachment Adjutant
Subject: Clifford A. Smith, John Smolinsky and Brian O'Hearne Past National Commanders Scholarship.
The Sons of The American Legion was established in 1932 by The American Legion to get the youth of this nation involved with The American Legion family and the great work that it does for our veterans, community and the youth of our nation. Our organization has grown to over 350,000 members across the country. Over the past 20 years, our national organization has donated millions dollars to various organizations. Here in Massachusetts, we have over 5,500 members and growing.
As a state organization, we raise money for various Americanism programs and I cannot think of a better project than helping the youth of our great state reach their goals in life by pursuing a college education.
This scholarship is dedicated to all the veterans that gave of themselves in the defense of our country, many giving the ultimate sacrifice and never returning to this great state of ours. We want to instill a feeling of Pride, Honor and Patriotism into each of the candidates who apply for this scholarship. The one thing that brings them all together is that they are eligible for this scholarship because their father, mother, grandfather or grandmother served in the armed forces and defended their country when called upon to do so. Any member of the Detachment of Massachusetts Sons of The American Legion in good standing is eligible for this scholarship.
We hope that the words from the Sons of The American Legion National Preamble will inspire you to apply for this scholarship:
Proud possessors of a priceless heritage, we male descendants of veterans of the Great Wars, associate ourselves together as Sons of The American Legion...To adopt in letter and spirit all the great principles for which The American Legion stands, and to assist in carrying on for God and Country,
